Building started in 72 A.D. and finished in 80 A.D.
Largest amphitheater built in Empire
Could hold up to 70,000 spectators
Roman Colosseum was 1st known as Flavian Amphitheater
Was built in location of emperor Nero's lake which was below his palace
Colosseum was used until year 217
It was repaired in year 238
In the Middle Ages the Colloseum was converted to a fortress
Colosseum got its name in Middle Ages from the Latin word "colosses" meaning colossal referring to a gigantic statue of Emperor Nero
Wild animals were kept in cages to fight each other and Gladiators in the Colloseum
It was estimated that 5,000 animals were killed the day the Colosseum opened
